Revitalizing a main arterial leading to the
Oakland International Airport was one component of a master plan to expand
the airport, upgrade transportation corridors, and stimulate economic
growth of the neighborhood. Environmental graphics became an integral
part of this plan, providing an identity to Oakland and celebrating its
heritage, history and diversity. Thirty-foot tall median banner structures
with cut metal letters and the city logo were designed. Colorful 20 foot
tall banners showcased Oakland’s features and landmarks. A second
series of smaller banners adorned the streetlights on the boulevard, celebrating
the cultural diversity of the city.
